Najaf fuel spill triggers traffic crashes, injuring nine and damaging 15 vehicles

NAJAF — A fuel spill combined with morning rain led to three crashes on Najaf’s Airport Road on Thursday, resulting in damage to 15 vehicles and injuries to nine people, according to a 964media reporter. The slick road conditions, attributed to a leak from a fuel tanker, caused drivers to lose control, halting traffic for several hours.

Najaf Municipality confirmed that it would deploy specialised vehicles to clear the oil residue to prevent further accidents. “We were informed of the crashes on the Airport Road this morning, where drivers lost control due to a fuel spill along the road,” said Najaf Municipality Media Director Bashar Al-Sudani to 964media. “Specialised equipment will be deployed immediately to remove the slippery substance from the Airport Road to prevent further accidents.”

The first crash occurred near Al-Jameaa District, involving five vehicles and causing minor injuries to three drivers. A second crash near Al-Adala Street involved eight vehicles, including two trucks, injuring five people. The third incident, in the outbound lane toward the airport near Al-Adala District, involved two cars, with one driver hospitalized.

The clean-up operation aims to restore safety and normal traffic flow on this busy route, frequently used by residents and airport travelers.
