KRG to distribute over 9,000 housing units to low-income residents next week
ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government will begin distributing more than 9,000 housing units to eligible low-income residents next week, Minister of Reconstruction and Housing Dana Abdul Karim announced during a press conference on Wednesday. This initiative, part of a larger housing project launched in 2023, aims to address housing shortages and provide affordable homes to vulnerable populations across the region.
The units will be distributed across the Kurdistan Region, with 1,700 units allocated to Erbil, 4,692 to Sulaymaniyah, 2,440 to Duhok, and 192 to Halabja. Priority will be given to 7,555 government employees, 15,605 unemployed individuals, and 762 people with disabilities who applied through an online platform and met the eligibility criteria.
“Some units are fully ready, and citizens can soon receive their keys, while others are still under construction and awaiting final services,” Abdul Karim said, assuring that all qualified applicants will eventually receive their allocated homes.
Those receiving completed units will enter into a 25-year repayment plan through contracts with the Ministry, while recipients of units still under construction will not be required to make payments until all services are fully functional.
Bashir Dawood, Director General at the Ministry, emphasized the transparency of the allocation process, explaining that it was conducted meticulously through the online application forms filled out by low-income individuals in August 2023. He noted that data verification involved consultations with universities and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and legitimacy of applicants’ information.
