PM Masrour Barzani calls for swift formation of new Kurdistan government after ‘successful’ elections
ERBIL — Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has urged the rapid formation of a new government following the “successful conclusion” of the region’s sixth parliamentary elections. Barzani stressed the need to quickly establish a functioning cabinet that can address the pressing needs of the Kurdistan Region.
“With the support of our dedicated citizens, I hope the new parliament will quickly form a capable government that will serve the peace, prosperity, unity, and progress of the Kurdistan Region,” Barzani said in a statement on Sunday.
According to preliminary results, Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party is on course to retain the 40 of the 45 seats it won in 2018, give or take a couple.
Barzani praised the election process as a significant achievement for democracy in the region, describing it as a “testament to Kurdistan’s resilience in yet another democratic test.” He offered his congratulations to all citizens of the region.
While commending the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission for its role in overseeing the elections, Barzani also expressed concern over technical issues that affected voter participation. “We are concerned about the lower turnout due to technical issues. It is crucial that these problems are addressed in future elections to ensure every citizen’s right to vote is fully protected,” he said.
The prime minister also extended thanks to internal security forces for maintaining peace during the elections and acknowledged the role of international observers in ensuring transparency.
“I thank all political parties for their participation and cooperation in making this election a success,” Barzani concluded.
