Welcoming students of all ages
New martial arts academy opens in Al-Zubair, boosting Basra’s combat sports scene
BASRA – A new chapter in Basra’s martial arts scene has begun with the opening of Oxygen Martial Arts Academy in Al-Zubair, offering a dynamic space for people of all ages to train in various global combat techniques. Founded by coach Abdullah Sarhan, the academy is the first of its kind in the region, providing training in disciplines such as Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, Boxing, and Wing Chun.
Sarhan emphasized that the academy is about more than just physical training, stating, “Our goal is not just to teach combat skills but to build a new generation that reflects positively on Al-Zubair and Iraq,” he told 964media. The academy is also unique in its focus on mental development, incorporating meditation and mindfulness workshops to foster focus and discipline among students.
The training curriculum spans various age groups, welcoming participants from 7 to 60 years old. Special attention is given to children and adolescents, with a separate facility and female trainers specifically catering to younger students aged 7 to 14.
Oxygen Academy sets itself apart by integrating global combat styles from countries such as China, Russia, Spain, and France, with each technique taught by specialized trainers. Monthly membership fees range from 35,000 to 55,000 Iraqi dinars ($23 to $36 USD), making these advanced lessons accessible to a wide segment of the community.
“It’s not just about the physical side; we are helping to shape young minds and fostering a generation of athletes who will make this city proud,” Sarhan explained.
In addition to physical training, the academy focuses on character development. Before each session, students attend workshops on ethics and self-discipline, with the goal of turning them into responsible citizens as well as skilled martial artists.
Looking ahead, Sarhan plans to host renowned coaches from Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman and prepare students for local and regional competitions in a variety of martial arts disciplines. “Competitions are key for growth. We want our athletes to experience the intensity of competitive sports to refine their techniques and build confidence,” Sarhan said.
