Farmers leave old methods behind

Abu Ghraib farmers turn towards modern agricultural machinery

BAGHDAD, September 25 — Farmers in the Abu Ghraib district of western Baghdad are increasingly turning to modern machinery for harvesting their crops, and leaving behind traditional methods. Many have also shifted from cultivating potatoes and other vegetables to growing herbs and greens like clover and alfalfa to reduce expenses.

This season has seen significant development in the cultivation of herbs, as well as corn, with the use of modern machinery at lower costs.

Many Abu Ghraib farmers have adopted modern machinery, moving away from manual labor and hand tools. This shift has made the farming process more efficient and less labor-intensive.

Ahmed Hussein, one of the farmers in Abu Ghraib, expressed how difficult it used to be to harvest clover and alfalfa by hand. He said the convenience and efficiency brought by modern machinery has made harvesting much easier.

Ali Farhan rents new machinery to farmers and emphasized that while the equipment can be costly, they are more cost-effective in the long run. He and other dealers have adjusted prices to make the machinery affordable for local farmers, encouraging their adoption as the equipment continues to evolve and improve.
