Suspects arrested in Baiji murder case, authorities confirm
SALAH AL-DIN – Adel Ahmad, the district commissioner of Baiji in Salah al-Din, confirmed on Friday that police have arrested the suspects involved in the murder of a family in the district, stating that the incident was a robbery.
A statement issued by the commissioner’s office as provided to 964 media states: “Thanks to the efforts of the Salah Al-Din Police Command in all its branches, the criminals who committed the murder of the deceased Safaa Shakir Hamid Al-Janabi and his family were arrested. It was revealed that the incident was criminal in nature, aimed at stealing money and jewelry.”
One of the suspects is a relative to the deceased who worked with him in his place of business. The second is a friend of the brother-in-law, both residing in Tikrit Al-Qadisiyya and Al-Diyum.
They were arrested near the district of Balad in their car, which the statement says was used in the crime.
The statement also claims the suspects confessed to the murder.
On the night of Aug. 28, the family of three was killed in their home in the Asriya district of Baiji. The victims—Al-Janabi, his wife, and their son Mustafa—were found bound, stabbed, and strangled. Their house was then set on fire.
The crime was discovered the following morning when smoke was seen coming from the residence.
Initial investigations indicated that the crime was not related to terrorism but was rather a local social conflict.
The Baiji police chief was removed from his position following the incident.
