Archaeological observation center to open in Chamchamal
CHAMCHAMAL – Plans are underway to open an archaeological monitoring center in the Chamchamal district, a move endorsed by regional heritage authorities years ago but delayed due to the unavailability of a suitable location and budget. The Heritage Authority of the Kurdistan Region confirmed that the initiative is a collaboration between the Chamchamal Mayor’s office and the Sulaymaniyah Directorate of Antiquities, with the Ministry of Culture expressing its approval years back.
General Director of the Kurdistan Region’s Antiquities, Kayfi Mustafa, informed 964media that the necessary location and funding for the center have recently been secured, with opening preparations underway. “The requirements for this center have been provided by the Chamchamal mayoralty, and it’s ready to be operational soon,” Mustafa stated.
Highlighting the significance of the Chamchamal district, Mustafa noted that the area is rich in historical sites, including notable ones like Chermo and Ashkewt-e Reshe. These sites require further surveillance and preservation efforts, underscoring the importance of establishing the monitoring center.
Additionally, the Chamchamal Mayoralty announced that with the aim of completing the preparations for the center’s opening, the mayor visited the Sulaymaniyah Antiquities Directorate. A committee from the Sulaymaniyah Directorate of Antiquities is scheduled to visit Chamchamal next Sunday to finalize the location and set an opening date for the facility.
