Basra's answer to Mutanabbi Street

Basra’s vibrant arts and culture scene on Al-Farahidi street

BASRA, September 16 — Al-Farahidi Street in Basra, often referred to as the visual counterpart of Baghdad’s Mutanabbi Street, has been buzzing with cultural and artistic activities and is a hub for dozens of writers and intellectuals who gather there to attend art exhibitions, dialogues, and lectures.

Abdul Hassan Mohammed, a visual artist, told 964: “The paintings are not for sale but for display only. Every Friday, a new painting is added to the exhibition, and it usually becomes the face of the exhibition.”

“People from various places come to see the art, take photos with it, and enjoy visual art and other forms of creativity,” he said.

Poet Dawood Al-Ghanam, one of the regulars on Al-Farahidi Street, shared with 964:  “The phenomenon of Al-Farahidi Street in Basra is an extension of the influence on Basra residents by Mutanabbi Street. It serves as the first platform for art exhibitions, cultural events, and book presentations.”

“This influence is positive in all its aspects, especially since most artists and intellectuals in Baghdad originate from the south, specifically Basra,” he added. “We hope the local government will develop this street, add more artistic touches to its corners, and provide better services for small businesses in the area.”
