Iraqi Airways launches direct flights between Baghdad, Tunis

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Airways launched its first direct flight from Baghdad to Tunis on Friday, signaling the start of a new route to the capital of Tunisia. The airline also revealed plans for future routes to Beijing and Kuala Lumpur.

Mitham Al-Safi, spokesperson for Iraq’s Ministry of Transport, reported to the Iraqi News Agency that the inaugural flight to Tunis departed Baghdad, with additional flights to Tunisia scheduled in the coming days.

“Tunisia is a significant location in North Africa and is poised to become a new tourist destination for travelers using Iraqi Airways,” Al-Safi said. The inaugural flight was operated using an Airbus A220.

Al-Safi further noted that Iraqi Airways is expanding its network with upcoming routes to Guangzhou and Kuala Lumpur. The airline recently resumed direct flights from Baghdad to Beijing on July 6.

According to the latest statistics, Iraqi Airways transported 272,972 passengers domestically and internationally last month.

The Ministry of Transport also highlighted a substantial financial improvement for Iraqi Airways, with revenues increasing by 89% compared to the previous year, although specific figures were not disclosed.

Additionally, Iraqi Airways announced the resumption of flights between Baghdad and Moscow starting July 16, following a suspension that began in early February.
