Nasrallah's speech signals heightened regional tensions
Hezbollah leader says Iraq part of open war with Israel
NEWSROOM – Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah announced in a televised speech on Thursday that the conflict against Israel has entered a new and open phase across all fronts in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen. Nasrallah stated that several countries have urged the group not to retaliate for a July 29 attack in a Beirut suburb that killed senior commander Fuad Shukri.
He also commented on the killing of Palestinian Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, stating that Iran considers the incident an “insult” to its honor and dignity, as Haniyeh was a guest of Iran.
The statements by Nasrallah come amid heightened tensions in the region and increasing fears that Iraq might be dragged into the conflict by Iran and its affiliated armed factions in the country.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Parliament member Hassan Salim claimed on X that the US orchestrated the assassinations of Haniyeh and Shukri, as well as airstrikes against Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces fighters in Jurf al-Sakhr in Babil governorate.
Salim, a member of the Iran-backed Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq group, also alleged that Washington was behind the helicopter crash that killed former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in May.
