Following Baghdad

Erbil ranks as second most polluted city in Iraq

ERBIL – Erbil has been reported as the second most polluted city in Iraq, following Baghdad, despite ongoing efforts to improve its environment, according to the local environmental organization Rojgari Kurd.

The organization has initiated a campaign to plant trees and set up garbage collection points in tourist areas, aiming to replicate the success of their previous campaign that replaced plastic bags with paper ones. This initiative was adopted by the Kurdistan Regional Government to enhance public health and environmental cleanliness.

Rojgar Mohsin, head of the “Rojgari Kurd”, told 964media, “In collaboration with a Swedish organization, we have launched a campaign to increase green spaces in Erbil by creating more garbage collection points in tourist attractions, planting trees and shrubs, and generally cleaning the city.”

Mohsin emphasized that their efforts, in cooperation with the government, will continue to clean and improve the city’s environment.
Pollution levels are assessed based on various factors, including emissions from vehicles and factories, waste disposal, land and air pollution, fires, and other issues. Erbil’s ranking as the second most polluted city is attributed to air pollution and ongoing fires.

“We are pleased that our attempts to improve the environmental situation in Kurdistan are succeeding…We hope our next steps will be just as successful,” Mohsin added.
