Wages range from $4 to $8 a day

Union to open in Ramadi to tackle low daily wages for workers

ANBAR — The Workers’ Union in Anbar has decided to open a branch in Al-Qa’im district to address the rights of workers in both Al-Qa’im and Al-Rumana cities. Mustafa Ghanem, the office manager, stated that the union has a plan to tackle issues related to workers’ rights.

Private sector workers in these cities are expressing significant grievances regarding their daily wages, which range from 5,000 to 10,000 IQD ($4 to $8). Most of these workers are employed in markets and commercial warehouses.

Ghanem highlighted that the union’s law requires business owners and traders to pay a minimum daily wage of 25,000 IQD ($19). He urged all workers to register with the union branch to enable it to defend their rights.

“The buying and selling movement in markets and shops has been very weak since the rise in the dollar exchange rate, limited to the early days of salary payments for employees,” Muhanad Khalid, a worker in Al-Qa’im market, told 964media. Commenting on the low wages, he said, “These wages do not meet the basic daily needs of our families.”

Ghanem added, “The goal of opening this branch is to alleviate the injustice faced by workers in Al-Qa’im and Al-Rumana. We have a plan to address all issues related to their problems and work towards adjusting daily wages.”
