'A serious precedent'

Unidentified gunmen attack Maysan governorate building

MAYSAN — Unknown assailants opened fire on the Maysan Governorate building with Kalashnikov rifles on Monday afternoon, causing material damage but no injuries, according to officials. The attack occurred after official working hours and has been attributed by some on social media to ‘tribal conflict’.

The incident unfolded in the Al-Shabbana area of central Amarah around 1:00 pm, when the building was “nearly empty due to a summer schedule shift,” a security source informed 964media. The attackers, traveling in a speeding car, managed to escape unidentified partly because the area lacks surveillance cameras.

The Security Committee of the Maysan Provincial Council condemned the attack, suggesting it was retaliation against recent measures to curb land encroachments. “This afternoon’s attack on the governorate building is a direct response to recent campaigns targeting land encroachers,” said Qasim Issa, head of the Security Committee.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the assault, which they are calling a serious precedent. “Early indications suggest that land encroachment mafias may be involved in this attack,” Issa added. He assured that the situation is now stable, with security forces having regained control.
