185 acres
Farmers in Amedi district expand sesame cultivation
AMEDI – Farmers in the Amedi district of Duhok have significantly increased their sesame cultivation this year, according to the Duhok Agriculture Department. Local farmers predominantly sell their sesame to factories that produce tahini, a popular Middle-Eastern condiment made from toasted ground sesame. Amedi is famous in the region for its tahini, which is known for its smooth texture and rich, nutty taste.
Sesame cultivation is also prevalent in the Akre and Bardarash districts of Duhok governorate, but Amedi leads in production, partly due to its renowned tahini production. This year, farmers in Amedi dedicated more than 185 acres of land to growing sesame.
Hassan Barchi, a farmer from the Deraluk area, shared his experience with 964media, stating, “This year, I planted about 15 donums (4 acres) of sesame, which is well-suited for the region’s soil. The crop sells at a high price here and is used for local tahini production.”
Muslih Hassan, Deputy Director General of Duhok Agriculture, also spoke with 964media. He noted that the increase in sesame planting this year should lead to a yield that surpasses last year’s production.
In total, Dohuk governorate cultivates approximately 824 acres of sesame annually. Last year, the Amedi district alone produced over 120 tons of sesame.
