Search underway for missing 73-year-old man in Zakho

ZAKHO – A 73-year-old man has been missing for two days in the Zakho district of Duhok, sparking a search by civil defense teams along the Khabur River amid concerns he may have drowned.

Hamid Mohammed of Zakho was last seen on the evening of Thursday. Surveillance footage captured him near the Khabur River shortly before he disappeared, raising fears of a possible drowning.

“Our teams are searching the area where he was last seen on the surveillance camera,” said Jamal Hasan, head of Zakho’s civil defense.

Eyad Tariq, head of Zakho’s Crime Prevention Office, also expressed concern but noted the lack of concrete information. “We do not have any definite information about his fate, but we are actively searching and hope to find clues within the next 24 hours,” Tariq told 964media.

The Kurdistan Region has seen a troubling number of drownings, with 26 cases reported in the first five months of this year. This follows more than 100 drownings last year, despite rescue efforts by civil defense teams who saved nearly 70 people.
