Lighting up Iraq's last stretch of land

Streetlight installation brightens Al-Faw district

BASRA – Electricity teams in Al-Faw district, south of Basra, have begun installing streetlights on main and side streets, fulfilling a pledge by the district mayor to illuminate the last stretch of dry land in Iraq.

“The campaign has been ongoing for days. So far, 1,500 streetlights have been installed, and we will continue until we cover all the alleys and streets of the district,” Al-Faw’s mayor, Walid Al-Sharifi, told 964media.

The project includes lighting up Ra’s al Bīshā, the farthest dry land point in Iraq.

The new streetlights have brought liveliness to the area, enabling residents to enjoy the outdoors after dark.

“The streets used to be in complete darkness as soon as evening fell. After installing the lights, the streets are now bright, and children can play outside at night,” said Mohammed Ali, a local resident.
