City plans modern replacement

Haji Ibrahim Mosque in Zakho’s market area demolished

ZAKHO — The Haji Ibrahim Mosque, a historic structure located at the edge of the Khabur River in the center of Zakho, has been demolished as part of the city’s redevelopment plans. The mosque, dating back over 50 years, was constructed in 1974 by Haji Ibrahim Mohammed.

The Zakho administration has decided to replace the old mosque with a larger, more modern facility at the same location. This decision is part of a broader effort to modernize the city’s infrastructure and provide community spaces that meet contemporary needs.

Rahwan Luqman, a descendant of Haji Ibrahim, assured 964media that redevelopment plans of the historic mosque would honor honor Mohammed’s legacy.

“We have set conditions that it retains the original name, the ground level of the mosque be converted into a car park, and shops constructed for the vendors currently around the mosque so no one is negatively affected,” Luqman said.

According to the new plans, the reconstructed Haji Ibrahim Mosque will feature a modern design, complete with extensive green spaces. Additionally, the underground car park will help provide space to accommodate the facility’s five-thousand-worshipper capacity.

The Haji Ibrahim Mosque, besides being a place of worship, has become a hub of community and religious activity due to its central location in the market area. Before its demolition, the mosque and its surroundings were a vibrant gathering place, attracting between 10,000 to 15,000 visitors daily.
