Halabja schools go solar with support from local and German organizations

HALABJA — Two schools in Halabja are now generating their own electricity using solar energy, thanks to a collaboration between the Halabja education directorate, German aid group Welthungerhilfe, and the Kurdistan Economic Development Organization.

Soran Omar, Director General of Education for Halabja governorate, announced the successful installation of solar panels at Halabja Industrial Preparatory School and Martyr Abdul Rahman Preparatory School.

“The modern systems were installed and will continuously provide the necessary electricity to power these schools,” Omar said.

The project aims to reduce the schools’ reliance on an unstable grid and provide a consistent source of electricity for education facilities.

According to Omar, plans are underway to equip four more schools in Halabja with solar panels. However, budget constraints prevent the immediate expansion of the program to all schools in the governorate.
