Flood damages in Kurdistan region exceed 64 billion dinars

DUHOK — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s preliminary assessments indicate that the recent floods in the Kurdistan Region, resulting from heavy rainfall spanning from March 18 to March 21, 2024, have inflicted a financial impact of 64 billion Iraqi dinars [nearly $50 million].

The KRG’s Joint Crisis Coordination Center also reported three fatalities and 13 injuries. Additionally, 1,579 individuals were relocated to hotels for shelter, with 35 being rescued specifically from floodwaters in Duhok and Zakho.

The physical devastation was widespread. The floods ravaged 21 homes completely, while 1,821 others suffered varying degrees of damage. Additionally, 236 vehicles bore the brunt of the disaster.

Governmental infrastructure was not spared either, with 30 projects sustaining damage alongside 412 markets. Moreover, 33 roads were affected, exacerbating transportation woes. The floods also led to the loss of 400 animals.

The autonomous administration of Zakho in Duhok province and Erbil city faced the greatest impact of the floods.
