Alqosh celebrates return of historic market festival

ALQOSH — The ancient market of Alqosh in the Nineveh Plains pulsed with life again this week as the town celebrated its second annual market festival since reopening after a seven-year hiatus caused by ISIS’s takeover of large swathes of the surrounding region.

The festival, which drew large crowds from across Iraq, marks a significant recovery for the community as the market’s closure coincided with the displacement of many Alqosh residents during ISIS control of the region.

This year’s vibrant celebration showcased the town’s enduring cultural heritage, featuring a diverse array of clothing, music, and traditional food.

The festival, believed to be a continuation of a tradition dating back to the 7th century CE, included musical performances echoing through the market’s narrow alleyways. Folk dances and songs unique to Alqosh resonated throughout the celebration. Visitors enjoyed displays of traditional handicrafts and ancient crafts alongside local delicacies, immersing themselves in the town’s rich history.
