Thousands gather in Qaraqosh for Palm Sunday celebrations

HAMDANIYA – Thousands in Qaraqosh, located in Hamdaniya’s Nineveh Plains, gathered to honor Palm Sunday, wielding palm fronds and olive branches, clad in traditional attire adorned with Assyrian and Babylonian symbols. This congregation marked the start of Holy Week, celebrating Christ’s entry into Jerusalem with communal hymns and chants.

“This feast commemorates Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey as a symbol of love and peace, victorious over the forces of evil and darkness, heralding eternal life for all,” Monsignor Mar Benidictus, Syriac Catholic Archbishop of Mosul, told 964media.

Reflecting on the preparation, Wamid Matti Francis said, “Today, we see more than 28,000 families from both inside and outside Qaraqosh, including Christians, Muslims, and Mandaeans, celebrating here.”

Francis underscored the unity and historical depth of the event, as participants donned attire representing Qaraqosh’s ancient heritage.

The celebration drew people from across the globe, including Solav Ephraim, who traveled from Australia. “I came to join my family in Qaraqosh for the celebrations. I am very happy and wish for them to always live in peace. Happy holidays to everyone,” Ephraim shared.
