Floods in Duhok leave six schools waterlogged, inaccessible

DUHOK – Recent heavy flooding in Duhok has left six schools waterlogged. Nabil Sinjari, spokesperson for the Duhok General Directorate of Education, stated that students would not miss out on their studies, as arrangements have been made to relocate them to nearby schools to continue their education.

The affected schools, located in the Baroshki neighborhood, have suffered extensive infrastructure damage. Four schools, Halwest, Chra, Hawkari, and an evening school, have had their walls collapse, making them unusable for the foreseeable future. The other two schools were inundated with water and mud and are currently being cleaned by municipal teams.

Sinjari said that four schools under the East Education Directorate require renovation due to the collapse of their structures.

Efforts are underway to clean and restore two other schools within the West Education Directorate, Shapol and Shwenewar, to allow students to resume attendance.

“Despite the challenges, the Directorate is committed to ensuring that education continues uninterrupted. Students from the damaged schools are being redistributed to other institutions close to their residences until their original schools are rehabilitated,” he said.

The timeline for the reconstruction and reopening of these schools remains uncertain. Cleanup operations continue, with the full extent of the damage yet to be assessed.

Duhok is home to approximately 220 secondary schools and nearly 250 primary schools.
