Locals, tourists, cautioned in Sulaymaniyah
Warning of penalties for littering as day trip season approaches
SULAYMANIYAH – The Sulaymaniyah Municipality has issued a warning to residents and visitors about the consequences of littering in scenic areas, announcing that violators will face penalties. As the winter season draws near, the municipality’s teams have been diligently carrying out clean-up operations across tourist destinations to ensure they are welcoming, clean, and orderly for visitors.
Zardasht Rafiq, a spokesperson for the Sulaymaniyah Municipality, conveyed to 964media that visitors to locations such as Azmar Mountain, Goizha, Debashan Street, and the vicinity of the Peshraw Tunnel are expected to dispose of their trash in the designated bins provided at these tourist spots.
Rafiq remarked, “It requires minimal effort for individuals to dispose of their trash responsibly. However, leaving areas cluttered significantly burdens our cleaning staff and municipal authorities.” He highlighted that keeping these areas clean is a shared duty, essential for preserving the attractiveness and sanitation of these sites.
Despite numerous public awareness campaigns, the towns, countryside, and bodies of water within the Kurdistan Region remain besieged by litter and single-use plastics, tarnishing the natural beauty and posing environmental hazards.
The municipality and environmental agencies consistently encourage the public to contribute to the cleanliness of tourist attractions, particularly during the high seasons of travel and leisure.
Rafiq further emphasized that polluting any scenic spot is a breach of regulations, and individuals failing to comply with cleanliness directives will be held responsible.
