Water resources ministry completes phase one of Hilla riverbank project
BABIL — The Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources, under the leadership of Minister Aoun Dhiab, celebrated the launch of the Hilla River Bank Development Project’s first phase in the Babil governorate. The inauguration featured a rowing competition, showcasing the project’s successful completion by Iraqi firms within the ministry’s purview. Minister Dhiab took the occasion to commend the contest’s victors.
The event saw the presence of Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Raed Abd Zaid al-Jashami, officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, Babil’s parliamentary representatives, and local authorities. Minister Dhiab pointed out that the General Company for the Implementation of Irrigation Projects carried out the first phase, under the auspices of the River Dredging Works Department and the General Commission for the Operation of Irrigation Projects, all under the ministry’s domain.
This initiative has enhanced 3,250 meters of the Hilla River banks with stone cladding, added a pedestrian bridge, and introduced improvements such as lighting and gardens, converting the vicinity into a leisure spot for Babil’s residents. With the first phase concluded, Minister Dhiab heralded the start of the second phase, aiming to expand these enhancements to the historic city of Babylon, lauding the ministry team’s dedication and efficiency in finalizing the project.
Minister Dhiab underscored the critical need for river conservation against intrusions and pollution, especially highlighting the Hilla River’s pivotal position as a primary tributary of the Euphrates River in the Babil governorate.
