Six varieties distributed to farmers
Erbil research center sees promise in local wheat varieties
ERBIL — The Erbil Agriculture Research Center is reporting positive results from its efforts to introduce locally developed wheat varieties to farmers, with early signs indicating high productivity and yield.
The center has distributed six varieties — Erbil 2, Erbil 3, Erbil 4, Erbil 8, Koya 4, and Koya 18 — to farmers across the Erbil governorate and the Bitwen Plains.
The center’s director, Abdulsamad Muhammad Salih, said the varieties had undergone 12 years of research and testing before being distributed.
He further stated he was satisfied with the crops’ performance as heavy rainfall this year has turned the wheatfields green in Baranti, Koya, Bitwen, Harir, Dibega, and Mala Qara.
“We have demonstrated our ability to compete with imported wheat varieties,” Salih said, adding that the center distributed all six varieties to a total of 78 farmers this year.
The findings come after Salih highlighted the varieties’ disease resistance and regional suitability earlier this year.
