During breeding season
Agriculture ministry announces curbs on fishing
ERBIL – The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Department of Animal Resources at the Ministry of Agriculture has declared a moratorium on fishing extending over three months.
The General Directorate of Agriculture has issued a directive to all pertinent departments in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, Halabja, and the Garmiyan, Raparin, Soran, and Zakho administrations, mandating the suspension of fishing activities from March 5, 2024, to June 15, 2024.
This annual ban aims to protect fish populations during essential breeding periods.
The prohibition specifically targets fishing methods such as the use of electricity, poisons, explosives, and fine-mesh nets.
These methods are known for their efficiency in catching fish but at a high ecological cost, including the indiscriminate killing of a wide range of aquatic species and the disruption of breeding cycles critical for maintaining fish populations.
