30 reporters take part in program
U.S. consulate supports investigative journalism training in Kurdistan Region
ERBIL — The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil in the Kurdistan Region announced on Monday its support of a training program for 30 journalists on investigative reporting techniques and standards. The program, sponsored by the consulate, is delivered by the Network of Iraqi Reporters for Investigative Journalism (NIRIJ).
The training curriculum focuses on professional standards, techniques, and writing skills for investigative journalism. Participants from across the Kurdistan Region will reportedly explore key themes and have the opportunity to develop and submit their investigative reports for evaluation and prizes.
“The training is focused on preparing investigative reports,” said Wrya Hama Karim, a participating journalist. “We’re submitting seven potential investigative ideas to report on, and awards will be given to those who successfully complete them.”
Award prizes for the winning investigative pieces rage from $500 to $700.
Consul General Mark Stroh attended the program launch with the consulate sharing a post on Facebook stating that the U.S. is “committed to working with local and international partners to continue to improve and promote media freedom and responsible media.”
