Rojhilat Garden opens in Sinjar, symbolizing community resilience

SINJAR – The Rojhilat Garden, meaning “Sunrise” in Kurdish, symbolizing the freedom of survivors, was inaugurated in the Sinjar district, west of the Nineveh Governorate, on Monday. The garden features a monument dedicated to the survivors.

This project is part of the reconstruction efforts and seeks to uplift the Yazidi community after the tragic events of 2014. Nadia Murad initiated the project in partnership with the Sinjar Municipality Directorate, with support from the Global Survivor Fund.

Sarab Elias, the director of Yazidi survivor affairs, told 964media, “This project significantly boosts the morale of Yazidi survivors, both men and women, who suffered through the most dreadful forms of persecution and assault by ISIS.”

“The garden and its memorial monument are symbols of resilience and survival, reflecting our community’s determination and sacrifice in the face of heinous violence and ethnic cleansing,” Elias continued.

Layla Khidr, a Yazidi survivor, stated, “This garden and its prominent memorial are more than just visual features; they symbolize resilience, sacrifice, and determination through our darkest times, igniting hope for a brighter future.”

“We are grateful to everyone who played a part in realizing this project, affirming our unity and our resolve to forge a brighter future for our children and future generations,” Khidr added.
