Iraqi border commission arrests four on drugs charges at Shalamjah crossing
BAGHDAD—The Border Ports Commission has announced the arrest of four travelers, including two foreigners, at the Shalamjah border crossing for allegedly attempting to smuggle 442 grams of crystal meth and 100 narcotic pills into the country.
In a detailed statement, the commission revealed that this operation was part of an intensified effort to clamp down on drug trafficking that has seen a sharp rise in Iraq recently.
The successful interception was a coordinated effort between the Directorate of the Shalamjah Border Crossing and the Customs Police. The apprehended individuals were caught in the act of smuggling, leading to their immediate arrest.
Following the arrest, an official record was created, and the suspects, along with the confiscated drugs, were handed over to the Shalamjah Customs Police Station for further legal proceedings.
According to a statement from the commission,
Following directives from the Head of the Border Ports Commission, Major General Dr. Omar Adnan Al-Waeli, to tighten inspection procedures for travelers and goods and to combat the scourge of drugs, the Directorate of the Shalamjah Border Crossing, in cooperation with the Customs Police, apprehended four travelers, including two foreigners. They were caught attempting to smuggle in crystal meth weighing 442 grams and 100 narcotic pills in a failed attempt to bring them into the country.
An official record was organized, and the suspects along with the seized materials were referred to the Shalamjah Customs Police Station for appropriate legal action.
