25 Iraqi MPs appeal to PM for unpaid Kurdistan Region salaries

BAGHDAD — Twenty-five Iraqi PMs have submitted a letter to Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, calling for the payment of the last three months’ unpaid salaries from 2023 to employees of the Kurdistan Regional Government. The affected employees have not been paid for October, November, and December of the preceding year.

Dara Sekaniani, a parliamentarian and signatory of the memorandum, told 964media that a recent Federal Supreme Court ruling requires the Iraqi government to ensure that Kurdistan’s residents are not deprived of their incomes. The ruling mandates the regular payment of KRG employee salaries by the Iraqi government.

Sekaniani is optimistic about recovering the unpaid salaries, indicating potential collaboration between Baghdad and the KRG. “Should Baghdad concur, it will allocate 618 billion dinars for each month, while the KRG is expected to add 320 billion dinars from its own revenues,” he said.

The Federal Supreme Court of Iraq decided last week that the KRG must surrender all oil and non-oil revenues to Baghdad. Consequently, the Iraqi government should distribute monthly salaries to KRG employees, not considering them as debts.
