Zakho shop owners seen rent relief amid cold spell

ZAKHO – Shopkeepers in the Old Market of Zakho, facing a downturn in business due to the cold weather deterring tourists, are calling for reduced monthly rents.

The Old Market, a key tourist attraction situated at the core of Zakho, a city near the Turkish border, is home to over 150 shops, including ten operated by women.

Despite its historic charm and efforts by local tourism authorities to boost visitor numbers, the severe winter weather has significantly impacted foot traffic, leading to calls for rent adjustments.

With current rents hovering around $200, vendors argue for a reassessment to alleviate the financial strain during winter.
