Up to 50 schools affected

Bardarash schools suffer from earthquake damage, renovation efforts underway

BARDARASH — The educational infrastructure in Bardarash district is struggling as a result of earthquake damage, with only 15 of 50 affected schools undergoing renovation.

The damage and reconstruction needs pose further significant challenges for the district’s 183 schools, most operating in double shifts.

Mehdi Khalil, Director of Education in Bardarash, told 964media that a majority of schools require refurbishment, noting that recent completion of renovations at the Aylul School were funded by a 100 million Iraqi dinar budget. He added that 15 schools have undergone renovations to date, with efforts underway to increase classroom capacity.

Khalil emphasized the geological challenges in Bardarash, where waterlogged subsoil has intensified earthquake damage to school buildings. He further revealed the approval of a 1.2 billion Iraqi dinar budget specifically dedicated to school renovations.
