Iraqi intelligence arrests suspect in Najaf extortion case

NAJAF — The Iraqi Intelligence Agency announced on Wednesday the arrest of a suspect caught extorting 25 million Iraqi dinars (approximately $17,000 USD) from a female doctor in Najaf.

According to an agency statement, the arrest occurred after a doctor working at a Najaf medical facility reported being blackmailed for the specified amount.

“An intelligence task force was immediately formed to investigate and gather information,” the statement read. “Following complete adherence to judicial procedures and the implementation of a planned operation, the suspect was apprehended in the act and subsequently arrested. During interrogation, the individual confessed to blackmailing the doctor and demanding the aforementioned sum. His statements were recorded, and he was handed over to the appropriate authorities for trial and due punishment.”

The statement did not disclose the suspect’s identity, motive, or further details of the investigation.
