Local community awaits solution

Qandil’s Pshtashan bridge remains unusable due to heavy rainfall

QANDIL — The only bridge linking the village of Pshtashan with the rest of the Qandil Mountains region has become impassable, cutting off essential access for the local community.

Despite numerous repair attempts by the local municipality, the bridge remains out of service due to damage from rain and floods, with water still flowing beneath it.

A video shared with 964media shows the bridge’s dilapidated condition, featuring parts made of wood and others of metal and concrete, all in a state of decay.

In a conversation with 964, Dilsher Ibrahim, co-president of the Qandil Municipality, confirmed the bridge’s dire state and the repeated attempts to fix it.

The Qandil Municipality, which operates independently from the Kurdistan Regional Government and is more closely associated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), says it has struggled to maintain the bridge.

“We have tried to repair the bridge three times this year with our resources, but despite our efforts, it continues to deteriorate due to the heavy rain,” Ibrahim said.

He also noted that the Pshdar Administration has been informed about the issue and requests for a metal bridge replacement have been made, but no response has been received.

The municipality intends to set aside funds next spring to construct a new, more resilient metal bridge to permanently address the problem.
