Minefield cleared of explosives in Garmiyan village

GARMIYAN, January 30 – A minefield in Garmiyan’s Pebaz sub-district has been cleared of explosive hazards and handed over to the local village council as agencies across the region work to reclaim legacy fields and increase public awareness about the dangers of mines.

One minefield remains to be cleared in Pebaz before officials can declare the area free of mines and unexploded ordinances.

The latest field, known as Minefield C, is situated in the village of Lewawan and was formerly used as a military base.

Adnan Ali Mohammed, the head of Pebaz’s village council, told 964media the minefield was located close to the main Kalar-Sulaymaniyah highway and covered an area of more than 15,000 square meters.

“This land served as public property before and it will be used for agricultural purposes now that it has been returned to the village council,” Mohammed said.
