Critical shortage of intensive care beds in Sulaymaniyah

SULAYMANIYAH, January 27 – Sulaymaniyah’s public hospitals face a critical shortage of intensive care beds, with only 25 available across the entire governorate, reports Sabah Hawrami, director of the Sulaymaniyah Health Directorate. Key districts like Raperin, Garmiyan, and Halabja, lacking dedicated intensive care units, are forcing patients to travel to Sulaymaniyah city, further straining existing resources.

Hawrami is spearheading efforts to launch a new intensive care unit in the city, with necessary equipment already in place. The proposed unit would charge 150,000 dinars for a day’s stay, compared to the 1,000,000 dinars currently charged by private facilities.

This development aims to assist up to 40 families daily. Additionally, Dr. Hersh Salim, deputy director general of the Sulaymaniyah Health Directorate, told 964media about plans for the German Hospital for Respiratory System Care in Sulaymaniyah to introduce about 40 new intensive care units.
