'Full support for Iraq's sovereignty'

Arab Parliament condemns Israeli threats against Iraq, calls for global action

NEWSROOM — The Arab Parliament has condemned Israeli threats to target Iraq, expressing unwavering support for Iraq’s sovereignty and security while denouncing interference in its internal affairs.

“The Arab Parliament condemns in the strongest terms the threats from the Israeli occupation entity to strike the Republic of Iraq,” the statement said. “We reaffirm our full support for Iraq’s sovereignty, security, and stability, as well as the principle of noninterference in its internal matters under any pretext.”

The statement also criticized Israel’s recent appeal to the United Nations Security Council, calling it hypocritical. “The occupation entity should first comply with international resolutions, including those from the Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly, by immediately halting its massacres and acts of genocide in the occupied State of Palestine, which have persisted for more than a year,” the Arab Parliament said, adding that Israel should cease its “blatant aggression” against Lebanon.

The Arab Parliament called on the international community and global institutions to pressure Israel into abandoning actions that could escalate regional conflict. It warned that such measures could destabilize security and peace across the Middle East.

The Arab Parliament, a legislative body representing the Arab League, aims to enhance joint Arab action and address regional issues.

On Nov. 18, 2024, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar submitted a letter to the United Nations Security Council, raising concerns over attacks by militias operating from Iraqi territory. Sa’ar described these as a “significant threat to international peace and security” and called for immediate action.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani responded on Tuesday, calling Israel’s step a “pretext for aggression against Iraq.” He stressed that decisions of war and peace are exclusively within the jurisdiction of the Iraqi state.
