Woman sentenced to death for shocking kidnapping and murder of nine-year-old girl in Babil

BABIL, January 19 – A Babil court sentenced a woman to death on Thursday for the September 2023 abduction and murder of a young girl, named Ritaj.

The nine-year-old victim was taken from Babil’s Alexandria district. Security forces later found the child’s charred remains.

The suspect admitted during an interrogation that she had killed the girl, dismembering her, and incinerating the body to conceal the crime.

Sentencing was carried out under Article 406 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which addresses premeditated murder.

The incident’s brutality sent shockwaves through Iraqi society, prompting widespread calls for the harshest possible punishment for the perpetrator.
