Ministry to enforce rights outlined in disability rights law

Iraqi Minister of Transport implements rights for persons with disabilities

BAGHDAD, December 13 — Transportation Minister Razzaq Muhaibis Saadawi issued directives on Tuesday to enforce rights for disabled Iraqis stipulated in the Law on the Care of Persons with Disabilities and Special Needs (Law No. 38 of 2013).

A statement from the Ministry of Transport said:

Minister Saadawi instructed a 50 percent reduction in travel ticket prices for persons with special needs, applicable twice a year. This move aligns with the guidance of Prime Minister Engineer Mohammed Shiaa’ Al-Sudani.

A new department, the Care for the Disabled and Persons with Special Needs, and administrative units for the care of the disabled have been established in all ministry formations. Additionally, efforts are underway to create a dedicated pathway at the Ministry’s center and deploy mobile units for the ease of mobility for persons with special needs.

The functional positions for disabled individuals will adhere to the percentage mandated by law (5 percent), falling under the responsibilities of the Federal Service Council.
