Kurdistan Regional Government greenlights disability-friendly housing units

ERBIL, December 4 — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has greenlit the construction of three residential buildings in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok for individuals with disabilities, with concurrent plans for a proposal to establish a complex named Autism City for individuals with autism.

Bargasht Akrayi, spokesperson for the KRG’s Board of Investment, confirmed to 964 that Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has granted approval for the construction of the disability-friendly housing units. Plans to implement the project are currently underway, and construction is set to begin once permits and approvals are completed.

Akrayi revealed that the Board of Investment has presented a proposal to the KRG for Autism City to meet the unique needs and well-being of individuals with autism. While currently a proposal, Akrayi expressed confidence the project may materialize in the future.

Saman Hussein, President of the Kurdistan Disabled Union, highlighted the absence of residential projects catering to individuals with disabilities in the Kurdistan Region. He also underscored the global precedent of creating specialized environments for the disabled.
