Kurdistan Region Presidency condemns attacks as ‘dangerous escalation’

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Region Presidency on Friday condemned the recent attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region, calling them a dangerous escalation that violates Iraq’s sovereignty and threatens national stability.

In a statement, the presidency said targeting the Kurdistan Region and “reigniting violence” represented “a dangerous escalation and a clear violation of Iraq’s sovereignty,” and that the attacks threatened the country’s stability and hindered efforts to preserve peace. It did not say who was responsible.

The statement follows a series of security incidents over three days. On Wednesday night, air defenses intercepted drones over Erbil governorate, with falling debris causing material damage but no casualties.

On Thursday, Dana Gas suspended production at the Khor Mor gas field because of what it described as “credible security threats,” cutting electricity generation across the Region by 2,500 megawatts.

Earlier Friday, the Kurdistan Region Security Council said seven missiles struck three locations in Sulaymaniyah governorate, including an attack on the headquarters of the Iranian Kurdish opposition group Komala that killed eight of its fighters, according to the group.

No group has claimed the attacks. Community Peacemaker Teams – Iraqi Kurdistan, which monitors security incidents in the region, documented 751 attacks across the Kurdistan Region between late February and late May, attributing them to Iran and Iran-backed Iraqi armed groups. Iranian Kurdish opposition groups and their camps were targeted in 232 of them.
