Home sewing machines remain essential in Hilla despite fashion trends

BABYLON, November 19 — Despite the diversity in ready-made clothing options, homes in Hilla are not without sewing machines. Merchants report that women in the city prefer certain types, with “Um Al-Farasha” being the most popular, suitable for both simple daily use and work.

Safa Dubai, a sewing machine seller, told Network 964:

“The sewing machine trade has not been affected by the modernization of fashion; in fact, sewing machines are considered essential household items.

Different types of used machines, such as “Brother,” “Pfaff,” and “Juki,” have entered the market at very affordable prices, not exceeding 150,000 dinars. Japanese machines are among the popular choices, along with “Um Al-Farasha,” considered the best among women.

Umm Ali, a homemaker, shared her experience:

“I inherited the sewing machine from my mother and learned to use it from her, but I didn’t master it well. After getting married, I started using it to sew clothes for my children.

All four of my sisters and I own household sewing machines, saving us expenses for simple tasks instead of paying for tailoring shops.

Most women use sewing machines at home for children’s clothes and school uniforms. Their clothes often get damaged, so we fix them at home.”

Umm Maryam, a tailor, expressed:

“Some older women still prefer home sewing. I have been practicing sewing for 20 years and have my own customers.

During the summer, the work is abundant because many women in popular areas prefer sewing the traditional ‘dishdasha’ garment rather than buying ready-made.”
