Police rescue woman with special needs allegedly confined on rooftop for a year
SULAYMANIYAH — Police in Sulaymaniyah rescued a 26-year-old woman with special needs from her father’s home in Said Sadiq, where she had allegedly been kept in “very poor conditions” for nearly a year.
The Sulaymaniyah Police Directorate said information was received indicating a woman who “cannot walk on her feet” had been confined in a space on the rooftop of her father’s house.
The woman had been kept there for “nearly more than a year, away from all humanitarian values, in a place that lacked the minimum standards of living,” police said. The location was “very dirty and unhygienic,” with no heating available during winter.
After informing the investigative judge, police went to the house and rescued the woman. Her father, born in 1977, was arrested.
Police said an investigation file has been opened and the suspect was detained under Article 7 of the Domestic Violence Law. The investigation is ongoing.
The woman was handed over temporarily to a relative pending the outcome of the case.
