Border forces intercept balloon smuggling more than 30 kilograms of drugs in Anbar
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Border Forces Command said Sunday it thwarted a drug smuggling attempt in western Anbar involving more than 30 kilograms of narcotics transported by balloon across the international border.
In a statement, the command said units from the 1st Battalion of the 6th Border Brigade intercepted the shipment as part of ongoing efforts to prevent the entry of narcotics and psychotropic substances into Iraq.
The drugs were being carried by a balloon over the border strip in western Anbar, the statement said, adding that the incident was documented and legal procedures were initiated against those involved.
The interception follows a similar case earlier this month, when border forces seized 18 kilograms of narcotics packed in 98 bags, each containing 1,000 pills, after another balloon was used to smuggle drugs into Anbar.
Iraq has faced a growing narcotics challenge in recent years, shifting from a transit corridor into both a consumer market and a redistribution hub. Authorities have intensified operations along border regions and in major cities, reporting rising seizures and thousands of arrests linked to production, smuggling and distribution.
Courts have handed down some of the country’s harshest penalties in high-level trafficking cases. Between January and August 2024, judges issued 140 death sentences and 500 life sentences in narcotics cases. In the first quarter of 2025, authorities reported 3,006 drug-related arrests, while nationwide seizures reached 250 kilograms in September alone.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani opened the Third Baghdad International Conference on Drug Control, presenting it as a key pillar of Iraq’s national and regional strategy to combat narcotics trafficking, as Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari outlined expanded enforcement measures and deeper international cooperation.
