Barzani rallies Kurdish support for Zakho SC fans in FIFA Fan Award

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Sunday announced he has voted for Zakho SC supporters in the FIFA Fan Award and called on people across the region and the Kurdish diaspora to join him in backing their nomination.

“I voted online in support of Zakho Sports Club fans so they can reclaim the title of the world’s best fans,” Barzani said. “I hope all Kurds, wherever they are, take part and vote for this global award.”

He thanked FIFA “for selecting the fans of Zakho SC as one of the three nominees,” describing the recognition as a source of pride.

Zakho fans were shortlisted after throwing thousands of teddy bears onto the pitch at Zakho International Stadium before an Iraq Stars League match, with the toys donated to children with cancer. FIFA described the gesture as one of the standout fan moments of the year.

The FIFA Fan Award recognizes exceptional acts of support in world football. Each year, three nominees are selected and the winner is determined through public voting on FIFA’s website.
