Qaladze man turns stadium surroundings into a green haven with 2,000 trees
QALADZE — A 56-year-old man in Qaladze, Sulaymaniyah, has planted around 2,000 trees over the past 16 years in and around the “Shaheed Mam Jutyar” sports stadium and nearby streets, transforming the once-barren area into a lush green space that now benefits the community.
Mahmood Mohammed, described by locals as an environmentalist and volunteer, told 964media he began planting trees around the stadium in 2009, when the area lacked any shade or greenery. “I wanted the stadium surroundings to be green and beautiful, and for people to sit in the shade of the trees,” he said.
With the help of his family, Mohammed continued the project year after year. His relatives watered the trees in his absence, often using water from their home supply to sustain the growing vegetation.
He said the effort was entirely voluntary and self-funded. Over time, the trees have grown into a thriving orchard, producing fruit such as grapes and pomegranates that residents now enjoy.
The area, once dry and uninviting, has become a vibrant public space for locals. “This work has brought joy to the people,” Mohammed said.
