'The importance of resolving conflicts'

Kurdistan Region’s President Barzani receives letter from US President Donald Trump

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday evening, in which Trump expressed “gratitude” for Barzani’s support of “his peace initiatives”, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

In the letter, Trump emphasized “the importance of resolving conflicts” in the Middle East and called for nations across the globe to “move beyond old disputes” in order to work toward “a shared future of peace, prosperity, and development.”

The correspondence follows Trump’s announcement of a 20-point peace plan for Gaza, which includes a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, hostage exchange, and a reconstruction effort. At a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh earlier this month, Trump said, “We have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to put the old feuds and bitter hatreds behind us.”

The U.S. president also reiterated his “administration’s commitment” to efforts aimed at what described as “fostering lasting peace, reducing tensions in the Middle East.”

Trump has previously claimed credit for ending “seven wars,” a statement he made during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Trump concluded the letter by extending his “best wishes for success to President Nechirvan Barzani and his family,” the statement read.

The letter comes days after Trump’s appointment of Mark Savaya as Special Envoy to Iraq. “I’m pleased to announce that Mark Savaya will serve as Special Envoy to the Republic of Iraq. Mark’s deep understanding of the Iraq-U.S. relationship, and his connections in the region, will help advance the interests of the American people,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Nechirvan Barzani has welcomed Trump’s decision in a statement, writing, “This decision underscores the strategic importance of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in advancing our shared interests and regional stability.”
