Curious camel joins cows in Rawanduz highlands after adapting to mountainous life

RAWANDUZ — A female camel brought from Iraq’s Anbar province has adapted to the rugged terrain of the Rawanduz highlands, where it now grazes freely alongside a herd of cows, according to its owner, Danar Hamedamin.

Hamedamin, a resident of Karak village in the Soran Autonomous Administration, said he bought the camel about 14 months ago as an experiment. “I bought her as an experiment,” he told 964media. “At first, she struggled for a couple of days, but now she’s comfortable and joins the cows daily in the mountains.”

Now approximately four years old, the camel initially showed discomfort in the colder, rockier climate but eventually acclimated and began moving freely with the herd. Hamedamin said she now travels with the cows between grazing areas and has experienced no health issues.

What began as a personal curiosity may soon turn into a larger project. Encouraged by the camel’s successful adjustment, Hamedamin said he is now considering expanding his herd by raising more camels in the region.
