Traffic directorate warns of dust storm reducing visibility across multiple governorates

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s General Traffic Directorate on Monday issued a warning about a dust storm expected to begin today, reducing horizontal visibility and, in some areas, eliminating it entirely.

The directorate urged all road users to follow safety measures while driving under these conditions.

In a statement, the directorate said the storm would affect several governorates, starting Monday, Oct. 13.

Drivers are advised to reduce speed, drive cautiously, and use low-beam headlights and fog lights instead of high beams. They should maintain a safe distance between vehicles, avoid overtaking, and stop on the roadside if visibility becomes zero, using hazard lights.

The directorate also recommended keeping windows closed and using internal ventilation to protect health.
