Baghdad traffic directorate to launch digital system for licenses and vehicle registration
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s General Directorate of Traffic announced Saturday plans to introduce a digital system allowing citizens to apply for driver’s licenses and register vehicles via mobile apps, aiming to simplify procedures and reduce congestion at registration centers.
Brig. Gen. Naseer Abdul Sattar, director of media at the directorate, told state media that the new platform “aims to reduce problems, traffic congestion, and the number of in-person visits to registration centers.”
He said the system “seeks to simplify procedures and provide advanced services that enhance citizens’ comfort,” adding that the directorate intends to make all operations fully digital to improve accuracy, minimize errors, and reduce direct contact between staff and the public.
Abdul Sattar noted that payments will be made electronically through e-payment cards, a system already in use, while medical examinations for driver’s license applicants will continue under the authority of the Ministry of Health.
The directorate is one of Iraq’s busiest government offices, handling large volumes of license applications, vehicle registrations, renewals, and fine payments, reflecting the heavy reliance on private vehicles in a country with limited public transportation.
